Activity

“Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the DP.”

Dodgeball Club

Attending Dodgeball Club allowed me to not only have a fun and healthy exercise opportunity, but also allowed me to connect with students from many different grades. I participated in the weekly matches, while also supporting and helping to organize the periodic tournaments that are hosted by the Dodgeball Club leaders. And of course, playing dodgeball with old friends, and making new ones, was a valuable and enjoyable social experience for all those involved. With Dodgeball Club taking place each Friday afternoon, this Activity experience served as the perfect complement to my academics, as it was a way for me to de-stress and have fun, while also cooperating with my teammates and engaging in a physically healthy activity. Dodgeball Club also had a heavy emphasis on cooperation, due to the team based nature of the sport. This CAS experience thus also honed the collaborative skills I use in the classroom, and allowed me to learn how to communicate when in different settings other than the classroom.

Earth Day at Socrates Sculpture Park

At this Earth Day celebration event at Socrates Sculpture park, I worked with other Helping Hands members to help prepare the park for the upcoming summer season events. For example, we launched park and beach clean-ups, and helped the with the large amount of seeding, soil preparation, and planting that had to be done. This was an annual project that I participate in, and consistently yield incredible results. Socrates Sculpture Park is a location that originally served as a landfill, and was later converted into a waterside park. As such, our contributions each year help to maintain and improve the park that even still requires an incredibly large amount of work and effort. Socrates Sculpture Park also hosts seasonal art exhibits that require maintenance and preparation, and as volunteers on Earth Day we helped with these projects as well. Earth Day at Socrates Sculpture park also required quite a bit of Teamwork and collaboration, and was an insightful experience into just how much physical work goes into maintaining public organizations and parks like Socrates. It was an unique Experience in which I was able to apply my physical efforts directly on my local community, and in doing so, help support a cause and organization that served a wide variety of peoples and endeavors.

BSGE Parent Teacher Conference Volunteering

I interacted with the parents and kids at the door answered questions they had about the school, and helped teachers by monitoring their meetings and managing their time as well as their lines of parents. I was also able to help teachers and school staff by teaming up with other volunteers to help clean rooms, organize papers, and set up bulletin boards in preparation for the conferences.
